国际商业机器翻译

    常有的情况是英语写得比较婉曲，比较间接(常常是由于结构上的原因，如被动式、假设语气、批评性转述等等)，我们在翻译时也不必“跟风”，大可用直接的述叙方式加以表述。如:
     Power would be gotten if there were money toget it with.
    有了钱.就会以钱谋权。
     Nobody would really doubt that IBM will leavethe competition in the dust.
    人们普遗认为国际商业机器公司不会在甚垂尘上的竞争中真要退进三舍。
    西方文艺作品中也有不少人热衷所谓“间接性”(indirectness),行文婉曲，有些人更故作深沉。我们翻译时也宜有所调整。例如:
    What determined the speech that startled him inthe course of their encounter scarcely matters, beingprobably but some words spoken by himself quite withoutintention-spoken as they lingered and slowly movedtogether after their renewal of acquaintance. He had beenconveyed by friends an hour or two before to the house atwhich she was staying; the party of visitor at the otherhouse, of whom he was one, and thanks to whom it was histheory, as always, that he was lost in the crowd, had beeninvited over to luncheon. There had been after luncheonmuch dispersal, all in the interest of the original move, aview of Weatherend itself and the fine things, intrinsicfeatures, pictures, heirlooms, treasures of all the arts, thatmade the place almost famous; and the great rooms were sonumerous that guests could wander at their will, hang backfrom the principal group and in cases where they took suchmatters with the least seriousness give themselves up tomysterious  appreciations  and  measurements.  Bendingtoward objects in out-of-the-way corners with their handson their kness and their heads nodding quite as with theemphasis of an excited sense of smell.…
